Questions and Answers
How will the 2016 elections affect my coverage?
Now that the 2016 presidential election is over, some consumers are wondering what the results mean for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and their Marketplace coverage moving forward.
Here are important points to remember:
- As of now, nothing about the Marketplace has changed. Consumers who enroll and pay their first premium by December 15, 2016 will have coverage starting January 1, 2017.
- Even if changes are proposed by Congress or the new administration, it may be months – or years – before those changes become law.
- The ACA requires most Americans to have health insurance. If a consumer does not have health insurance, they will be subject to a financial penalty when filing their federal income taxes.
- CoverKC Coalition members throughout the region remain dedicated to ensuring consumers have access to accurate information about their Marketplace coverage options and financial help they may qualify for.
